Description | Bull's head and mounting cast in one piece (as 67-39-3) without handle attachment. Almost identical to 67-39-3 in size and style except for lack of handle attachment. No sign that one had been there and been subsequently broken or filed away. The upper ends of the mounting were broken off in antiquity just at the point where the original rivets would have been from comparison to 67-39-3. New rivet holes then drilled closer in (i.e. seems sure to have been pried off or broken away from another cauldron and prepared for refitting. The holes are close to fitting those on cauldron 67-39-1a, but possibly not. Also, the curvature of this piece does not match that of the cauldron. (NB: No trace of another wider set of mounting holes to be seen on 67-39-1a) Fine green patina, black smooth patches. Core filling has been chipped away leaving only traces inside. Occasional bluish discolorations inside (modern?). Metal sample drilled from back. |
