Description | An Alaskan frontlet or headdress made primarily of wood, ermine pelts, sea lion whiskers, and feathers. The cap structure is made from baleen, cloth, and plant fiber. The carved wood depicts a crouching bear and, where the stomach would be, another animal with a frog in its mouth. Wood is painted red, brown, black, and dark green. On either side of the wood are layers of down and dyed feathers with their tips cut to form points. The top of the headdress is lined with 20 sea lion whiskers. Below the whiskers, 10 ermine skins with fur are mounted by their heads with the rest of their pelt hanging downward. |
