Description

Globular body; bulging neck with everted lip; two vertical loop handles on body. With a face on neck, decorated with incised lines and punctuate rows and triangles.

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jar/bottle with an ovate body, bulging neck, rounded rim, 2 strap handles on the body, and a flat base. The vessel has a modeled face on the neck with eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. There is a geometric design on the neck in incised lines and punctate dots. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing and reducing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange and gray in color. Fireclouding is present on the body. One side of the pot appears dark gray/green and deformed, likely from over-firing. The surface also appears gray and porous, likely from escaping gases. There are striations from smoothing tool on the exterior. Evidence of usewear includes residues/staining on the exterior and repair. There is a brown residue around the holes in the body, possibly from an ancient repair. The catalogue number is written on the bottom of the base and black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1649."
