Description

Wide mouthed. In the shape of a fish. Painted

Wide mouthed vessel with an effigy-zoomorphic body, flaring collar, rounded rim, no handles, and a flat base. The vessel is shaped like a fish with tail, and protruding fins(?) on the sides. The face has two raised eyes, a nose, and a mouth. There are traces of red paint around the neck and on part of the body. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior and a smoothed finish on the interior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is buff and orange in color. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink on the bottom of the base. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1598."
