Description | Shield. Wooden shield. Shaped like a scalloped rectangle. Truncated conical boss in middle front, lug handle on back. Hair plugs inserted around all edges, as well as at top edge of boss and on handle. Two crossbars across front, lashed on with rattan. Top edge is separate piece, attached by mortise-and-tenon joints. Surface carved in geometric pattern and painted with black paint. Beaded strap on back attached to top and bottom of handle. Exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, St. Louis 1904. |
