Clark Erickson, Curator-in-Charge of the American Section and curator of this special exhibition, will discuss the excavation and spectacular finds of the Pre-Columbian cemetery of Sitio Conte, as well as explore the exhibition's themes.

Since 1937 the Women's Committee has been dedicated to assisting the Penn Museum in countless ways, including raising awareness and funds through events ranging from auctions to galas.

2014 Treasures Sale & Show

Dazzling jewelry and accessories, presented by more than two dozen distinguished designers and dealers, are on view and on sale at the Sixth Treasures Sale & Show. Behold a sparkling selection of jeweled and precious metal designs—including classic and contemporary designs, vintage pieces, estate jewelry, fine jewelry by emerging young artists, and accessories. Set in the Kintner-Dietrich gallery wing of the Penn Museum, Treasures is presented by The Women’s Committee of the Penn Museum. Proceeds go to support the educational mission of the Penn Museum.

Sotheby’s Presents: Calder Jewelry – The Artist – The Movement – The Collection

 

Leslie Prouty, Senior Specialist and Senior Vice President, Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s will talk about Alexander Calder, the inventive artist and designer of avant garde jewelry. Calder brought the same genius for design and motion found in his mobiles to his jewelry, which are unique objets d’artMany pieces to be highlighted were part of the Makler Family Collection, recently auctioned by Sotheby’s. Hope Makler, a valuable member of the Women’s Committee until her death in 2013, was an avid collector of Calder jewelry. Dr. Paul Makler will provide anecdotes of his late wife’s passion for introducing this avant garde art to Philadelphia. Free with admission.

“Bling” with a Native American Bent and Jewelry, Beauty and Adornment in Ancient Ur will focus on jewelry and adornment displayed in the Museum’s Native American Voices and Iraq’s Ancient Past Exhibits. Free with admission.

Treasures of Ancient Panama: Reconstructing Sitio Conte

Join Dr. Clark Erickson, Associate Curator, Penn Museum American Section, and Co-Curator of the upcoming exhibition, Beneath the Surface:  Life, Death, and Gold in Ancient Panama. Dr. Erickson will speak about the Pre-Columbian ornaments of gold, bone, teeth and resin, and the brightly painted, modeled pottery excavated in Sitio Conte, Panama. These items provide insight into the lives, beliefs, and achievements of the people of Sitio Conte. Free with admission.
