Cerveza! Celebrating the South American Tradition

Explore South American beer with the Young Friends of the Penn Museum. Dr. Clark Erickson, Curator-in-Charge, Penn Museum American Section, discusses the history and makings of traditional Andean beer using objects in the Museum's permanent collection and his research. Dr. Erickson focuses his talk on chicha beer and manoic beer—both of which have historical roots in the Amazon region—and the indigenous cultures responsible for their creation. He also speaks about his work with Dogfish Head Brewery to create a traditional chicha beer, as chronicled in The New York Times.

Following the talk, guests adjourn to the Museum's lush Warden Garden for an outdoor reception, where they enjoy South American-themed hors d'oeurves, such as shredded pork and sweet potato empanadas with smoked tomatillo salsa, and grilled vegetable skewers with pepper aioli and goat cheese, and a sampling of ales and lagers from Central and South America—or based on regional ingredients—including:

-Xingu Black (Brazil)
-Bohemia Clásica (Mexico)
-Cusqueña Premium (Peru)
-Cerveza Cristal (Peru)
-Dogfish Head Palo Santo (USA)
-Southern Tier Choklat (USA)

Unfortunately no chicha will be served due to a lack of availability in the United States.

A cash bar is available throughout the reception. Must be 21+ to attend; reception moves indoors in case of rain. Admission: $30; Museum members: $25.

The Young Friends of the Penn Museum is a group of active Museum members ages 21-45. Questions about joining? Call 215.898.5093 or email

Photo: Dr. Clark Erickson, Curator-in-Charge, Penn Museum American Section, poses with several wooden keros, wooden vessels used to imbibe alcoholic beverages, created in 16th-century Peru. These and other objects from the Penn Museum collections—some dating to more than 1,000 years ago—help to illustrate the history of Andean beer during "Cerveza: Celebrating the South American Tradition," Thursday, May 8 at the Penn Museum.
