Petersen Lecture and Drexel Award Presentation
The Million-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle: Excavating a Cargo of Medieval Glass
Friday March 26, 2010, 7:00 pm

George F. Bass, Professor Emeritus,Nautical Archaeology Program, TexasA&M University, and former curator,Penn Museum Mediterranean Section,describes the excavation by the Instituteof Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&MUniversity between 1977 and 1979 of ashipwreck from about AD 1025. The shiphad carried a cargo of three tons of brokenglass meant to be recycled. For the nexttwo decades conservators worked yearround to piece the glass back together,publishing their results in 2009. Priorto the lecture, Dr. Bass will be presentedwith the 30th Lucy Wharton DrexelMedal for archaeological achievement.
