Description

Freud, Franklin, and Beyond Seminar Series: An Interdisciplinary Forum on Mental Health and Society

The Nature of Human Nature

Melvin Konner, MD, PhD, the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Anthropology and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology, Emory University, is the forum presenter.  Dr Konner considers how knowledge of the evolution of the human species, human childhood, and the human brain helps us to understand the nature of human nature.

His talk focuses on the development of human relationships and emotions, and how these influence the range and limits of human adaptation.  Comparisons across human cultures and with other species help to highlight the essential and specific features of human relationships, emotion, and mind.

Lawrence D. Blum, MD, Faculty, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, and Robert Seyfarth, PhD., Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, are the discussants.

This program is sponsored by the Departments of Psychiatry and Anthropology of the University of Pennsylvania, the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.  Major funding for the program is provided by the Foundation of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.
