Description

The Golden Age Of Archaeology: Secrets Beneath The Sand

This goat standing upright against a flowering plant and its counterpart in the British Museum are two of the most famous objects from the Royal Cemetery of Ur. They have frequently been referred to as the Ram Caught in a Thicket because the biblical image (Gen. 22:13) so aptly fits the sculptures.<br>Ram Caught in a Thicket, Gold, silver, lapis lazuli, copper, shell, red limestone, and bitumen, H. 42.6 cm. Penn Museum Object 30-12-702. You are invited to The Golden Age Of Archaeology: Secrets Beneath The Sand Gala to celebrate the opening of a new long-term exhibition Iraq's Ancient Past: Rediscovering Ur's Royal Cemetery. The Gala is presented by The Women’s Committee and will be held in the Chinese Rotunda.

Guests are treated to a night of royal fun: feasting, amusements, dancing, an auction, and even the thrill of a real dig.

The exhibition tells the story of the 1920’s discovery and excavation of the Royal Cemetery at Ur in modern-day Iraq, rivaled only by the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. The rich inventories of gold that opened the world’s eyes to the fully glory of ancient Sumerian culture. Issues facing modern-day Iraq and the preservation of its culture are also featured.
