Description | Figure (head and torso) carved from light weight yellowish brown pumice. Lines indicating eyes and mouth scratched into the pitted surface of the face. Torso round, flattened on bottom. Resembles the large stone Easter Island figures (moai). Alton A. Lindsey, who collected this figure on Easter Island when he was a member of Admiral Byrd's expedition to the Antarctic in 1933-35, showed it to a geologist, whose opinion it was that the figure had weathered "for centuries." The eyes and mouth, Dr. Lindsey thought, had been scratched into the surface comparatively recently. |
