Description | Headdress constructed in a triptych style with a central panel and two wing panels. The central panel is made of two pieces of wood stapled together at the top and bottom. The two side wings are attached to the central panel with hinges. Each panel has a triangular top and a painted animal design in red, green, and black. The reverse of each side panel is painted with mountain and cloud designs. Each side panel also has a cord attached which is likely used to open and close the panels while worn. Side panels have ermine pelts wrapped around the lower edges and all three panels are lined with colorful feathers along the upper edges. The central panel is lashed to a ring of bent wood which is then wrapped with muslin. The muslin extends upward to cover the back of the center panel as well, with both copper and iron nails holding it in place. Muslin straps hang down to affix the headdress to the wearer's head. |
