Description | In form corresponds to the Attic type skyphos (Richter and Milne figs. 174 and 177 (closer to 177)) of an advanced stage. Fully glazed except for underside of foot and resting surface and for a broad area around lower wall: in middle of it a wheel-run narrow glazed band. Decoration on the walls of the skyphos is in applied color (white?, yellow?, purple?) which has largely disappeared leaving "footprints". Just below greatest diameter of wall are two closely spaced wheels painted lines. The upper of these serves as the lower limit on each side of a large panel which extends to the lip above and to the sides nearly to the handles. The sides are formed by a single vertical line, the upper limit by a band of vertical strokes. In the center of each panel is a large palmette with a single leaf, diagonally set, on each side. The glaze has fired largely black but in part to a medium brown. Mended from fragments but complete. |
