Building Transformation Icon Building Transformation

We’re on our way to a new Penn Museum—and this journey requires a few detours. As we update our galleries and amenities to accommodate all visitors’ physical needs, elevator access is limited in parts of the building. Visitors using mobility devices or strollers should use the entrances listed above to access these galleries and spaces.

To move between these two areas of the building, visitors with difficulty using stairs will need to exit the Museum and re-enter through the other entrance. For more details or for assistance, please visit our Accessibility page.

Our Building Transformation will dramatically reconfigure our historic building. Some galleries might be offline and some artifacts might not be on display, but there will always be at least 30,000 square feet of gallery space to explore.

  • The Mexico & Central America Gallery and Africa Galleries are now closed for a year of renovations. We are reimagining these important galleries, adding new flooring, cases, lighting, and air-conditioning, and creating dynamic new displays.
  • We are working on creating new galleries for our renowned Egyptian collection. The Egypt (Sphinx) Gallery is now closed for conservation of monumental objects, but the Egypt (Mummies) Gallery remains open.

Temporary Closures and Alerts

The Museum or its galleries may occasionally be closed to visitors during exhibition updates, private functions, holiday closures, and other events.

Please note these upcoming alerts to help plan your next visit:

  • The Mexico & Central America, Africa, and Egypt (Sphinx) Galleries are closed for transformation.
