Description

Sommerville: Red Jasper - Athene, with abbreviated Greek Inscription on obverse on helmet and legend above head: "Smyrna, Phocaea, Lebedes, Klaros, Eretria, Chalics, Teos, Mycale, Colophon, Ephesus, Priene, Myonnesus, Miletus". Also on Reverse."Gift from the league of the Ionian cities to the shrine of the Clarean Apollo in Lebedes." Greek and Roman Cameos, Case D.

Vermeule: Red Jasper. Cameo. (Unmounted) Helmeted head of Athena to the right. For the lengthy inscriptions on obverse and reverse, see Sommerville pp 670 f. Italian Renaissance, probably 16th Century.
