Description

Sommerville: Antique red enamel. Interesting Byzantine Cameo, about the seventh century. At this epoch one first finds Christ on the Cross. Byzantine, Case II.

Vermeule: Red enamel paste? Christ on cross between Virgin Mary and St. John. Inscription IC XC above at left and right. Style similar to that of #580 but perhaps Byzantine rather than Western European.
