Description

Discordial body slightly convex above: bearing seated man in full relief. Spout and flat bridge handle missing. Painted above with two quadrupeds

Narrow necked jug with a squat-cylindrical body, missing neck, missing rim, 1 bridge handle on the neck, and a flat base. The vessel has a modeled human figure sitting on the top and serving as part of the bridge handle. The whole vessel is slipped and painted in red, blue and black. There are two painted creatures on the top that appear to be quadrupeds with tails, claws, and teeth. The side is painted red, and the human figure is painted delineating his clothes and facial features. There appears to be a burnished finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. Evidence of usewear includes surface attrition on the bottom. The catalogue number is written on the object in black ink on the bottom of the base. Black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1188."
