Description

Ceremonial, woven hat entitled "Determined Killer" originally worn by the first woman diplomat (Lucy Fowler Williams, Guide to the North American Ethnographic Collection at the UPMAA, 2003 p. 32). Designs are painted all around in green, red, black, and orange. Atop the hat, a killer whale crest is attached with the face of a killer whale carved into the lower end. The whale's eyes and teeth are ornamented with abalone shell inlay. The edge of the crest that curves from the front to the back has cavities with resin, suggesting it was inlaid with abalone shell which is now missing. The middle has a hole carved which identifies the whale. Teal, red, and black paints used. Hair fringe is attached along the back of the crest. The lower half of the hat is twined to create a concentric diamond or "scoop-net for taking candlefish" pattern (Frances Paul, 1944 p. 60). A hat band encircles the center of the interior. Associated with hat cover, NA11744.

Technical notes: twined, 14 warps, 15 wefts per square inch at rim.
