Many construction projects in historic areas of Philadelphia require archaeological investigations. These investigations yield diverse stories and reveal a history not always found in textbooks. This course will cover the laws governing archaeological investigations and discuss major findings of local excavations. Sites investigated include the Museum of the American Revolution and the Independence Visitor Center, Liberty Bell Center, and President’s House at Independence National Historic Park. We will discuss how Philadelphia has handled investigations of historic burial grounds at sites such as First German Reformed Church at Franklin Square, Bethel Burying Ground, and First Baptist Church Burial Ground on Arch Street. Instructors will also cover ongoing work along the I-95 corridor.

Rebecca Yamin has a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from New York University with a specialty in historical archaeology. She has worked in academic, museum, and contract settings, most recently serving as the head of John Milner Associates’ Philadelphia office. Her many Philadelphia projects include the excavation of the sites of the Independence Visitor Center and the Liberty Bell Center on Independence Mall, and the site of the Museum of the American Revolution on Chestnut Street. Before coming to Philadelphia, she directed the large Five Points project in New York City. Her publications include Digging in the City of Brotherly Love: Stories from Philadelphia Archaeology, Archaeology at the Site of the Museum of the American Revolution: A Tale of Two Taverns and the Growth of Philadelphia, and The Archaeology of Prostitution and Clandestine Pursuits. She is working on a second edition of Digging in the City of Brotherly Love.
